Reported July 23, 2026

30-second summary

Snap-on grew Q2 revenue 4.7% YoY to $1.235B with organic sales +3.0%, as C&I posted a standout +11% reported print (with operating margin recovering to 16.8% from 13.5% in the prior-year quarter) and gross margin expanded ~90bps YoY to 51.4% — the first clean YoY gross margin gain in the last four quarters. Offsetting that, RS&I decelerated hard to +0.7% reported (from +2.0% in Q1), Tools Group organic growth cooled again, and Financial Services originations of $281.0M remain below the $290M watch line. Management narrowed the FY2026 tax rate guide to ~22% (from 22–23%), reaffirmed ~$100M capex, and still declined to frame any 2026 revenue or EPS number — the no-guide posture is now durable.

Management tone

Narrative arc: Q3 2025 "resilience proving out, RS&I momentum confirmed" → Q4 2025 "RS&I fades, Tools flips negative" → Q1 2026 "C&I share gain with margin give-back" → Q2 2026 "C&I share gain WITH margin recovery, gross margin expands, RS&I stalls."

The critical tone shift this quarter is that the "resilience" language now has more receipt in the numbers than it has had in any of the last three quarters. Three quarters ago the phrase was doing defensive work as segment-level outcomes weakened beneath it; this quarter it lines up with a 330bps YoY C&I margin recovery, a 90bps gross margin expansion, and a second consecutive C&I double-digit reported print. Press release quote: "We believe that our markets and our operations possess and have demonstrated continuing and considerable resilience against the uncertainties of the current environment." For the first time in four quarters, the language and the print are directionally consistent on the margin side.

The tariff narrative has moved from "structural cost layer to be absorbed" (Q1) to essentially resolved on the margin line. Q1's gross margin ran 30bps below prior year specifically because tariffs and material costs offset RCI. Q2's gross margin is 90bps ABOVE prior year despite an even tougher tariff comp (many incremental tariffs went into effect in Q2 2025 per the Q1 brief). The absence of any tariff-specific hedging in the current press-release qualitative statements — versus Q1's explicit tariff framing — reads as management stepping down the risk disclosure because the pressure is easing, not because they are hiding it.

The FY2026 guidance posture has hardened rather than opened up. Six consecutive quarters into the no-revenue-no-EPS cadence — Q2 2025 through Q2 2026 — with the tax rate now narrowed to a point estimate, management is signaling comfort with the FY plumbing while continuing to refuse a top-line frame. That is a specific choice: the tax narrowing shows they will refine what they can, and the absence of revenue commentary should now be read as durable policy, not transitional caution. The Q1 watch item asking whether Q2 would produce first quantitative 2026 framing is definitively resolved negatively.

RS&I is the tone counter-story. The Q3 2025 "Holy grail" language and the Q3 2025 +8.9% organic print are now two quarters removed, replaced by three consecutive prints of +1.0%, ~flat, and now +0.7% reported. The press release does not defend RS&I with any specific product or launch framing — the MT2600 diagnostic platform callout from Q4 2025 is not repeated. When management stops re-flagging a product it previously championed, the working assumption should be that the launch has not moved the segment needle enough to be worth re-mentioning.

Answers to last quarter's watch list

Whether C&I operating margin recovers above 15% while revenue growth holds — C&I operating margin was 16.8% on +11.0% reported growth. Margin expanded ~240bps sequentially from Q1's 14.4% and ~330bps YoY from Q2 2025's 13.5%. The volume-for-margin trade worry from Q1 is refuted — this is now volume AND margin.
Resolved positively
Tools Group sustaining positive YoY growth — Tools Group grew +3.0% reported in Q2, second consecutive positive print, but cooled from Q1's +5.0%. Operating margin of 22.6% compressed 120bps YoY. The reacceleration is real but not compounding, and Financial Services originations remain soft. Status: Resolved positively (though not decisively)
Financial Services originations stabilizing — Originations were $281.0M, up sequentially from Q1's $264.6M but below Q2 2025's $293.0M (implied ~-4% YoY). Second consecutive YoY decline confirms the franchise financing footprint is structurally smaller than mid-2024 levels.
Resolved negatively
Gross margin breaking back to flat YoY — Gross margin was 51.4%, up ~90bps YoY from 50.5%. The RCI-and-footprint framing that Q1 called into question is now backed by the print, and the tougher Q2 2025 tariff comp was cleared cleanly. This is the most positive answer on the watch list.
Resolved positively
RS&I OEM dealership activity in Q2 — RS&I decelerated further to +0.7% reported with operating margin down 160bps YoY. The press release does not break out OEM vs. independents in detail on the extracted data, but the aggregate segment read is worse than Q1, not better. The Q1 hope that European OEM offset would carry has not materialized.
Resolved negatively
Any first quantitative 2026 framing — No revenue or EPS guidance issued. Tax rate narrowed from 22–23% to ~22% but that is a refinement, not a new framing. The no-guide posture should now be treated as durable.
Resolved negatively

What to watch into next quarter

Whether RS&I organic returns to positive mid-single-digit growth — Q2's +0.7% reported is the third consecutive sub-3% print. A fourth sub-3% quarter in Q3 with organic still flat or negative would re-rate RS&I as a mature, low-growth segment and remove it from the growth-engine bucket entirely.

C&I operating margin sustaining above 16% — Q2's 16.8% is the highest print of the covered period. A reversion below 15% while revenue growth stays double-digit would suggest the Q2 margin was a mix or one-time-cost benefit rather than durable operating leverage. Above 16% for a second quarter would validate the structural share-gain framing.

Financial Services originations breaking above $290M — the threshold has been below prior-year levels for four consecutive quarters. A Q3 print above $290M with positive YoY would be the first genuine data point in favor of a franchise-channel financing recovery.

Gross margin holding above 51% — Q2's 51.4% cleared the toughest tariff comp. Q3 2025's base is 50.9%; sustaining 51%+ in Q3 2026 would confirm the RCI-and-footprint framing has fully absorbed the tariff cycle. A relapse below 50.5% would reopen the question.

Tools Group organic growth acceleration or reversion — two consecutive positive prints (+3.4% then implied ~+2.5% organic) are the "green shoots" data. A third positive quarter with Financial Services originations finally turning up would confirm a channel inflection. A reversion to flat or negative alongside weak originations would rewrite the two-quarter narrative as a comp-driven optical recovery.

Whether the tax rate guide narrowing gets a Q3 follow-through — if management refines the FY guide further (e.g., "approximately 21.5%") or repeats "approximately 22%," it will confirm the narrowing was a real read on the mix, not a one-quarter adjustment. Below 21.5% actual in Q3 would signal further FY EPS support absent operating changes.
